A travel eSIM adds a data line
Installing a data eSIM does not require changing the number registered to your WhatsApp account. Your existing chats and account can remain linked to the usual number while the travel eSIM supplies internet access.
Set the two lines for different jobs
Keep the home SIM enabled if you need to receive messages or authentication codes, but choose the travel eSIM as the mobile-data line. Turn off data roaming for the home SIM to avoid accidental roaming charges.
- Home SIM: usual number and required SMS.
- Travel eSIM: mobile data.
- WhatsApp: keep the existing registered number.
Avoid changing the WhatsApp account number
A phone may detect a different SIM and offer number-related options. You do not need to use WhatsApp's Change Number feature merely because you installed a travel data eSIM.
Consider home-carrier charges
Keeping a home SIM switched on does not automatically make every service free. Review the home carrier's rules for incoming calls, voicemail and SMS abroad, and ensure its mobile-data roaming remains disabled.
